Oman Research and Education Network (OMREN) is a central part of a sustainable infrastructure that contributes to the emergence of an effective national innovation ecosystem. It provides the research and education community in the Sultanate of Oman with a common network and collaboration infrastructure adapted to their needs.

Mission

To enable a technically, financially manageable and sustainable national Information and Communication Technology infrastructure and services that shall effectively contribute to the development of innovation, research, education, strategic and international e-collaboration with the research and education community of the Sultanate of Oman.

Vision

To be the partner of choice for the research and education sector in the Sultanate of Oman through the provision of world class e-infrastructure and services continuously meeting the sector needs.

SERVICES

An ever-growing list of services will be maintained to meet OMREN’s vision and mission. OMREN has liaised with NRENs to determine the possibility of collaboration through shared international interconnected services, which leads to empowering interaction, collaboration, sharing collective goals of empowering education and research. Most of the listed services are deployed along with the connectivity, while few may take little longer, such as the e-Campus.

MPLS

Allows the implementation of dedicated end-to-end circuits. Members can exchange data with special features in terms of speed, capacity and confidentiality.

INTERNATIONAL CONNECTIVITY

OMREN acts as a co-coordinating point for international collaboration between research and education institutes. OMREN members are connected to Internet2 and GEANT

INTERNET CONNECTION (ILL)

This is a commodity internet connection that allows OMREN members to connect to the general internet outside the private research and education network.

VIDEO CONFERENCING

A live connection between researchers in separate locations for the purpose of communication, usually involving audio and often text as well as video.

EDUROAM

eduroam is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community.

RESEARCH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (RIMS)

(RIMS) provides an opportunity for researchers to submit research proposals online

MASADER

Provides researchers and students with an access to various types of sources, electronic books, journals and information.

OMREN DATA CENTER

OMREN tier 3 Data Center with collocation, Disaster Recovery or even running critical applications utilizing the high-speed point to point secure connectivity (MPLS)

e-CAMPUS

e-Campus solution will allow universities, colleges and research centres in the sultanate to benefit from OMREN connectivity in running their entire applications on a community cloud hosted at OMREN data centre.

SHUAA

An electronic database of research, studies, journal articles, abstracts research and innovation materials that were written or compiled in the Sultanate of Oman.

OMREN Federation

Provides a secure access to online resources and services for research and higher education community in the Sultanate of Oman. The OMREN Federation is an official member of eduGAIN

eduGAIN

eduGAIN is a service developed within the project of GÉANT, it is a cooperation project between the European network for scientific research, education and the European Union.
